In Praise of Boxing Amateur Boxing calls for great physical fitness, mental toughness and a high level of self-discipline. It also calls for skill, motivation and tactical astuteness. It generates a deep sense of fair play and sportsmanship, which continues to influence behavior for a whole lifetime. All youngsters who take part in sport are providing an outlet for their personal aggression, whether or not they recognize that fact. Boxing channels aggression into constructive activity and personal achievement. Few sports provide such an opportunity, in a manner, which demands a sense of personal discipline and respect for oneself and ones opponent, as boxing. These young people demonstrate qualities of chivalry, courage and determination, in bringing honor to their schools, clubs, gyms, and country. The history of the sport and the investment of dedicated practitioners in the past demands that we focus on the future, so that the young people of tomorrow can continue to enjoy the sport and its benefits for many generations to come. Olympic boxers must wear head-guards and the rules are very strictly enforced. Nevertheless, many people feel that boxing is dangerous and would like it banished as an Olympic sport. Although criticized in the press and media by the ill formed, amateur boxing is shown by all available statistics to be among the safest of sports. |
