Marcus Thomas A MODEL AMATEUR BOXER Date of Birth: 6th October, 1970 Weight Category: Middleweight (75kg.) Marcus is the longest serving amateur boxer in Barbados. His boxing career started in 1982 when he was twelve years old, attending Carrington Primary School. After leaving school he was recruited into the Barbados Defense Force Sports Program, where he remained for almost seven (7) years. Marcus, who has captained the Barbados team for the past decade, could best be described as the flag bearer of amateur boxing in Barbados and a role model for young boxers. He has successfully represented Barbados at the Carifta Games, the Caribbean Boxing Championships, the Central American and Caribbean Games (CAC), the Pan American Games, and the Commonwealth Games. Marcus has the distinction of being the first boxer to represent Barbados at two Olympic Games – Barcelona (1992) and Atlanta (1996). He qualified for Atlanta with a gold medal performance at the pre-Olympic trials in Puerto Rico. This is without doubt his most outstanding achievement in boxing to date. On the international scene, Marcus scored a remarkable victory in Maracaibo, Venezuela, in 1998, when he won a Silver Medal for Boxing and for Barbados, in the Central America and Caribbean Games (CAC) Marcus has a distinguished Caribbean boxing record. He has been participating in regional championships, first as a junior, then as a senior, since 1987. Marcus hails from a family of boxers, who have supported amateur boxing for many years and whose contribution to Barbadian boxing is evident. Marcus is a fine gentleman in every sense of the word and must be congratulated for his fine career; not only for his achievements as a competitor, but more so for his dedication to the sport of Boxing, to which he remained a faithful amateur. Of Marcus it can be said "You are truly a fine example of a Caribbean Sportsman". The boxing family is firmly behind Marcus in all of his endeavors and would be delighted to see him make his third Olympic Games in the year 2000.
