A Short Hisory of Boxing 3 It is fair to say that boxing has had a very long history. It is fact that boxers are internationally famous, particularly the heavy weight champions. The popularity and success of the sport is the direct result of the promotion of televised fights; a true testimony of what the media can do for an activity. In 1904 boxing was included for the first time in the program of the Olympic Games of modern times. At those games, bouts took place in seven weight divisions. The medical exam before the boxing competition was introduced. It was a men only competition. In recent years, Asia and Latin America have produced many outstanding champions in some of the lower weight divisions, while Cuba and the Communist bloc have done exceedingly well in Olympic competition. Amateur boxing is widespread today and is currently practiced by about 186 countries around the world. The sport is regulated and conforms to a single code of conduct, with a common set of rules, which governs all aspects of the sport. All member countries have linked themselves together in a single body known as the International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA). In November 1946, delegates of 22 national associations met in London to set up the Association Internationale de Boxe Amateur (AIBA). Over the years, AIBA has always been strictly oriented towards the advancement of boxing and the spreading of the sport around the world. Over the span of fifty- three years, AIBA has managed to grow into one of the biggest international sports federations, and today is a highly respected member of the Olympic family. |
