Boxing Alphabet A. AMATEUR The status of a boxer who has never competed for money or earned money through athletic skill. B. BREAK To come out of a clinch without punching, on order of the referee. C. COUNTER-FIGHTER A boxer who usually waits for his opponent to lead before delivering his own punch. D. DECISION The official verdict at the end of a bout which designates the winner. E. EXCITEMENT The thrill of watching a keen contest. F. FOUL Any act by a boxer contrary to the rules. G. GENEROUS The publics perception of any corporation, which supports community, based sports programs. H. HOOK A punch delivered from the side with the elbow hooked. I. INFIGHTING Fighting at close range. J. JAB A straight punch delivered to either the head or body. K. KIDNEY PUNCH An illegal blow to the back over the kidneys. L. LOWER WEIGHT CLASSES Represents the lighter weights classification of those boxers who fall between 105 to 139 pounds, namely Light-fly, Bantam, Feather, Light or Light-welter. M. MOUTHPIECE A plastic or rubber held between the mouth to protect them. N. NATURAL Suggests certain inherent
qualities or abilities, which make an athlete, seem
highly likely to succeed. O. OFFICIALS Those persons appointed to
regulate our sport. P. PARRY To ward off an
opponents fist or arm with an open glove. Q. QUICK Stresses the swiftness and
speed of a boxers movements or reflexes. R. ROUNDHOUSE A punch delivered with the full swing of the arm. S. SPAR To make offensive or defensive gestures without touching the opponent. T. TECHNICAL KNOCK OUT A verdict given when a boxer is no longer able to defend himself, quits voluntarily, or is seriously injured. U. UPPERCUT A blow that involves a distinct upward motion. V. VALUE A good return on a sponsorship investment. W. WEAVING Moving the body from side to side to confuse an opponent and to avoid giving him a fix target for blows X. An unknown quantity or
